Not sure which Steuerklasse applies to you? Take this quick 3-step quiz to find your optimal tax class and maximize your monthly net salary.
When you start working in Germany, you will be assigned a tax class (Lohnsteuerklasse). This class tells your employer exactly how much income tax to withhold from your gross salary each month.
Crucial fact: Your tax class does not change the total amount of tax you owe the government for the year. It only changes your monthly cash flow. When you file your annual tax return (Steuererklärung), everything is balanced out. If you paid too much because you were in the "wrong" class, you will get a refund.
Your Tax Class (Steuerklasse) determines how much income tax is deducted from your monthly gross salary by your employer. It does not change your overall annual tax liability; it just changes how much is prepaid each month. Any over- or under-payment is settled when you file your annual tax return (Steuererklärung).
Yes, but only if you are married or in a registered civil partnership. Singles, divorced individuals, and widowed people are automatically assigned to Tax Class 1 (or 2 if they are single parents). Married couples can choose between the 4/4 combination or the 3/5 combination.
If you both earn roughly the same amount, 4/4 is usually the best choice, as it prevents large tax bills at the end of the year (with the optional factor method). If one partner earns significantly more (usually 60%+ of the total household income), the higher earner should take Class 3 and the lower earner Class 5 to maximize monthly net household income.
You can change your tax class once a year by submitting a form to your local Finanzamt (tax office) or digitally via Elster. As of recently, married couples can also change it multiple times a year if certain conditions are met. The change usually takes effect the month after you apply.
